Excursions
Island of Capri Only a mere 5 Km of sea separate Capri from Punta Campanella on the tip of Sorrento Peninsula. The 11 Km2 island supports a population of about 12,500, distributed between the two townships of Capri and Anacapri. Capri's popularity with international tourist is due in good part to its rediscovery by some of the world's most famous writers. In addiction to its historic, literary and scenic wonders, Capri can be boast of excellent beaches, making it one of the world's leading swimming and climatic resorts. A boat trip around the island, especially in season, can be a very enjoyable experience, showing Capri from a completely different viewpoint and providing rare views of the breathtaking beauty that makes Capri so famous. Along the road from Anacapri to Damecuta are the excavations of the last three villas from the days of Imperial Rome. In Damecuta, rich in archeological finds, a tour can be made to the tower Torre di Damecuta, that was erected in the Middle Ages to defend Capri's coasts against marauding pirates. From here, too, there is a splendid view of Ischia, Procida and the Gulf of Naples. Another point of interest reached from Anacapri is the world-famous Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), undoubtedly one of the world's most famous beautiful limestone caves.
The Vesuvius Mt. Vesuvius is the best known volcano on earth; it dominates the Bay of Naples with its characteristic cone. People who come from Sorrento or Pompei, can reach Ercolano-Scavi station taking the Sorrento-Napoli or Pompei-Napoli lines. A bus service, managed by Trasporti Vesuviani, and a taxi service is available from Ercolano-Scavi station to Mt. Vesuvius, until 1000 metres (0,62 miles) of altitude. Proceeding along the rim of the crater, one can observe the whole extent of the southern part of the volcano and, during days with good visibility, it is possible to see the entire gulf of Naples, from the Sorrento peninsula to Cape Miseno, Procida and Ischia.
Pompeii On a bed of prehistoric lava, Pompeii is founded in the second half of the VIIth century B.C. with an organization effort that presupposes objectives of lookout and defence connected to the nature of the relations between the Greeks and the natives. An earthquake in 63 did much damage, and an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 (which was described by Pliny the Younger) buried Pompeii under cinders and ashes that preserved the ruins of the city with magnificent completeness–down to the fresh colors of the wall paintings. The habits and manners of life in Roman times have been revealed in great detail at Pompeii by the plan of the streets and footpaths, the statue-decorated public buildings, and the simple shops and homes of the artisans. The houses and villas have yielded rare and beautiful examples of Roman art. Among the most famous are the house of the Vetti, the villa of the Mysteries, and, in the suburbs of Pompeii, the villa of the Boscoreale.
Herculaneum As far as we know , Herculaneum was an italic city founded around the IVth century B.C. coping, in the geometric regularity of his structures, the lay-out of Naples, to see how the "decumani" (the main streets, with an east-west orientation) and the "cardines" (narrower streets) identify with those of the Partenopean city. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum which is quite different from what one "feel" in other ancient world centres brought to light so far, including Pompeii. To a large extent this is due to the special circumstances of its interment by Vesuvius during the eruption of 79 A.D. The city was not struck by ashes and lapilli, but by a torrent of mud flooding down from the slopes of the volcano. Herculaneum seems more elegant and refined than Pompeii because of the original character of architecture and decoration (ornaments) and because of the natural position above the scenary of the gulf.
Amalfi Coast Stretching for 50km (31mi) along a promontory from Sorrento to Salerno is some of Europe's most beautiful coastline. The road hugs the zigzagging bends and curves of the cliffy coast, overlooking intensely blue waters and passing picture-postcard villages that cling to the cliff walls like matchbox houses.
Positano On one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Province of Salerno stands Positano, in a splendid panoramic position. The centre of the town is enchanting: here in small Flavio Gioia square, among the delightful white or pastel-coloured houses, with their typical cubic shape and the greenery of luxuriant gardens, stands the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its splendid majolica dome. Considered one of the best-equipped and exclusive tourist resorts in Italy, also famed for its flourishing fashion tailors, Positano perfectly combines the beauty of its natural surroundings and numerous beaches, Marina Grande, Ciumicello, La Porta, Arienzo e Fornillo, with the fascination of its ancient fishing port and the charm of its steps and lanes crowded with quaint colourful shops.
